Sporcle’s Grid Quiz format lets you create crosswords, Sudokus, and other grid-based puzzles. Follow this guide to get started.
Getting Started – Creating a Grid Quiz
- Navigate to the Quiz Management Dashboard and click “Create a Sporcle Quiz.”
- Enter your quiz details:
- Quiz Name: Type a name for your quiz (you can change this later).
- Quiz Type: Select “Grid.”
- Grid Size: Choose a size (minimum 1×1, maximum 30×30). Use an ‘x’ separator (e.g., 12x12).
- Mode: Choose between Crossword, Sudoku, or Custom Grid.
- Click “Create Quiz.”
Step 1: Basic Quiz Info
After creating your draft, you’ll land in the Basic Info tab. Here, you can:
- Select a quiz category (e.g., Sports, Geography, Entertainment).
- Write a quiz description (e.g., “Can you solve this Grid Puzzle?”).
- Edit the quiz URL (e.g., /games/username/grid-sample).
- Set the quiz timer (default is 10 minutes).
Step 2: Adjust Quiz Options
In the Options Tab, you can enable:
•Hint Display: Show number hints in Sudoku-style puzzles.
•Answer Reveal: Choose when answers appear (on game end, correct entry, or word completion).
•Multiplayer Settings: Adjust if the quiz should be played solo or in teams.
Step 3: Designing the Grid
Go to the Data & Style tab and use the available tools to build your quiz.
Key Tools for Creating a Crossword or Sudoku:
•Text Tool (T icon) – Enter answers in grid cells.
•Use the space bar or double-click to switch between horizontal and vertical entry.
•Toggle Tool (□ icon) – Fills empty cells with black squares (for crossword-style blank spaces).
•Symmetry Tool (⊙ icon) – Automatically applies crossword-style symmetry when filling blank spaces.
•Generate Crossword Button – Assigns hint fields after entering words.
•Hint Entry Tool – Add hints for Across and Down words.
Step 4: Customizing the Grid (Optional)
Use additional styling tools to enhance the quiz:
•Prefill Cells (👁️ icon) – Automatically reveal specific cells at the start.
•Background Color Tool (🎨 icon) – Add custom colors to certain grid areas.
•Glyph Tool (○ icon) – Add gridlines, circles, or other shapes.
•Apply Tool (✏️ icon) – Modify multiple cells at once for bulk editing.
Step 5: Finalizing and Publishing
Before making your quiz public, be sure to:
•Test your quiz using the “Test Quiz” button.
•Adjust grid dimensions if necessary (gear ⚙️ icon).
•Add relevant tags (e.g., Crossword, Sudoku, Puzzle).
•Click “Launch Game to the Public” (or “Make Game Private” to keep it unlisted).
